Also tagged 1992, Arsenio HallThis week I’m posting videos from the original run of PBS’ Soundstage. The series first started in 1972 and was called “Made in Chicago.” rdUnlike the variety shows and lip-synced performances common at the time, “Made in Chicago” had live performances and, at times, improvisation & collaboration. In 1974, the show’s name was changed to Soundstage, and it became more widely distributed by PBS. In 2003 PBS revived the series and has featured many prominent popular artists.
If you’ve been following the posts here, you’ll know I’m a sucker for a good Tom Wait’s video. This episode of Soundstage aired on December 3rd 1975. It seems to be around the same time as Mike Douglas Show video I posted a while back, however this one stands out due to its amazing spoken word performance of Eggs and Sausages, followed by Semi Suite.
Also tagged 1975, SoundstageOld Grey Whistle Test was a live music program that ran on BBC for 16 years, from 1971 to 1986. Over its decade and a half run it had performances from the most influential musicians in every area of popular music.
I will be covering the Old Grey Whistle Test in depth at some point. This week’s posts are just the tip of the iceberg of great performances. I will be getting the DVDs and listening to commentary’s etc. Apparently though, the North American versions of the DVDs don’t contain the same tracks as their European counterparts, likely due to some licensing issues, but still, a bummer. Stay tuned.
Shot in 1977 this Waits second appearance on the show. Wait’s had only recently had his first commercially successful album ‘Small Change’ which was released in 1976. It was the first Waits record to reach the Billboard Top 100 (which he wouldn’t repeat until 1999’s Mule Variations.) I believe this clip features his backing band ‘The Nocturnal Emissions.’
Also tagged 1977, Old Grey Whistle TestI think this might be the “Mike Douglas Show” week. I’ve never heard about it before now, but it is full of great gems. I’ve added every related DVD to my netflix queue and planning on digging into it more.
This clip is of Tom Waits performing “Eggs and Sausages” in 1976. Followed by a really interesting interview, this guy has never been off in forty years.
Also, what is the VH1 Archives? Because both of these Mike Douglas show clips are from it. And so far I approve.
