Judy Collins – Anathea

Many popular performers boycotted performing on “Hootenanny” because the show “blacklisted” certain performers with “left-wing” views (like Pete Seeger.)

The Trashmen – Surfin’ Bird

As suggested by my good friend Trent, I am dedicating this week to Minneapolis bands. I am actually ashamed that I hadn’t done it before now.

One of the first acts to gain national attention out of Minneapolis was a surf rock/garage rock back called “The Trashmen.” Their big hit was a “mash-up” of two other songs, The Rivingtons, “The Bird’s the Word” and “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” which they called entitled “Surfin’ Bird”

The Trashmen have had periods of inactivity, but have being touring in recent years. Here they are performing the bird at one of St. Paul’s finest venues, the Turf Club.

It is great to know that a Minneapolis band has had such an impact on popular culture to spawn such evil as this:
